Just How We came to Such a State as This Without Really Trying......Part 12

The road to Jacobs Lake

I felt so very sad leaving the St.George area....I would live there...so beautiful..but our goal was to get down to coyote Howls in order to have a fairly warm winter. We were tired of cold and snow and wanted a winter without those things. No shoveling snow,no trying to keep our little trailer warm with the stove top burners and our water lines always freezing up till spring..

So we drove out of Utah and me with a heavy heart. On leaving the area a big rig trailer was broke down in the middle of the highway which we had to go around and not so easy with a trailer like ours..but we made it around and felt bad for the people in the broken down trailer.

We drove down, down, down into Polygamist country. It was all settled by early day Mormons who broke away from the main stream  church because they wanted to practice polygamy and the main church had outlawed it.They are still around and doing quite well with the look of the houses and ranches that we passed by.

We stopped at one of the towns for a rest and found a small grocery/health food store ran by these people. The girl was beautiful in her quaint Amish like dress but the little boy with her looked at us with frightened eyes as if we were demons. Wonder what he had been told about outsiders Anyway bought a few groceries and some candy and went on our way. I am sure that they were glad to see us go.

I looked forward to Jacobs Lake but not the PERSON who would be waiting for us. I have to say the time without him was most pleasant. We still had to stop our truck a few times as it over heated making the steep mountainous climb towards Jacob Lake. Like so many forests that I had seen lately so much of it was burned down or ravaged by disease and bugs...Sadly much of our forests are suffering from these plaques...it breaks my heart.

We finally pulled into our camp site and there he was..our FRIEND waiting for us. I felt so much dread besides I was not feeling well...my lungs were getting worse....could hardly breath at all any time of the day or night.

The area was okay but I was really not into it...besides being allergic to pine and juniper trees and a thing that I did not know about till a few days later called altitude sickness...So I really did not enjoy the camp spot and barely got out of bed.

Greg kept wanting Pete to go to the Grand Canyon with him which was just a short ways a way. I told Pete to go just to get him to shut up about it. Pete did not want to leave as I was so sick...but I knew I would be alright and just wanted to get that whole thing over with. Pete hurried them through the trip wanting to get back to me ..he thought Pete was being too mother henish. But I had gotten worse on that short trip...Also Greg said he would pay for the trip that Pete did not really want to take but guess what..he gave Pete a few dollars and thought that should cover it....far from it.

The next morning we heard Greg cursing and shouting. We peeked out the window to see him whipping his jacket at a little bird. The bird would fly up on a branch and wait till he had stopped
his crazy rantings then the bird would fly back down on his fancy van and....poop.....then Greg would start cursing all over again. Finally we watched the bird fly away to a tree and fly back with other birds in tow. And they all started landing on his van and all started ….pooping.....finally the birds got bored and left. We on the other hand were laughing so hard our stomachs were cramping. I swear that this happened...you can ask Pete....I think those birds knew a jerk..and they had fun tormenting him. Makes me laugh right now just writing it down.

Unfortunately that being one of the highlights of this trip...I was getting sicker and we told Greg that we were leaving the next day .instead of the two weeks like he had planned. He tried to talk us out of it but Pete was resolute. That evening Greg built a fire in his pit near the window of where I was laying and wanted Pete to come out and join him. Pete said no as he was keeping an eye on me. But he started the fire anyway even when he knew it would give me problems. He put it out shortly as no one to share it with....luckily....and left early the next morning with a quick goodbye. He also decided that we were to meet up at Walmart in Flagstaff Arizona and then travel together to Sedona Arizona. Pete never said that we would...I think Greg took it for granted that we would. Surprise...surprise.......

to be continued (the final leg of the trip to Coyote Howls)

  1. Great story Sis. I just worry about that Greg and his demeanor :-(

  2. I am not worried...did not use his real name but doubt if he is any where near us anyway...besides telling what happened just the scoundrel he truly is
