The village of Why...which Coyote Howls has to thank for its existence ..in many ways is quite unique. An unincorporated village with no post office ...but does have a few businesses which I find interesting and unique.

 

The main store called Why Not is the typical gas and goody store for the tourists passing through on their way to and from Mexico (which is only 28 miles away and the door to the beach called Rocky Point the sea of Cortez) Actually it is not so much a typical store but seems more like Disneyland and the daughter of the owner is a fantastic artist and designer and has painted the whole outside of the building in wonderful works of art...breath taking actually. She has also brought in local plants and trees and taken an old car from the desert...turned it into a water fountain and plays music. Pete and I will often eat a Mexican Ice cream bar ..while sitting in front of this car and listening to the music. The happening thing in this village lol. But to be honest it is a very busy establishment and so many take pix of this place. I intend to as well as soon as I get my camera fixed. One other point that plays in my head is that my own mother was born and raised in the town of Wynot Nebraska...weird eh?


A few other businesses that I have not explored yet is a Rock Shop (and I am a big fan of collecting rocks and shells). A business that I saw on youtube of some people who make belts and other things out of tires and such. A second hand store and a fresh seafood shop. I am sure there are more but have not explored it yet. There is a restaurant here that is open a few days a week ...heard it was good but have not tried it yet. Beyond these few businesses have not heard of others but have a feeling that there may be some hidden gems here in this village.


Why did turn out to be much larger then I first thought..so many homes hidden away in the trees and bushes and dry gulches. Rather surprised me when I discovered all these hidden homes. The yards themselves have very little in the yards...no grass and very few flowers..but a number of cacti and other local Senora desert plants...The ground is bare sand and dirt but the yards are huge and enclosed by tall fences to keep the coyote,burros and wild pigs out. Very different then anything that I have ever been around. It does take some getting used to.


The surrounding lands around Why as with Coyote Howls is either BLM land,Military land or Indian Reservation. Everything does seem to be fenced off unlike Utah where most all the land is open and owned by the government.


South of here,,about a mile from here and owned by Indians is a small casino but after going into it one evening on the gas and goody side decided not to revisit. The guards standing at the door were a little scary and mean looking. Not doing that again for sure.


We have made a few friends in town and have enjoyed the association of such...really nice people here...in fact will be buying a swamp cooler and golf cart very cheaply from one of them...We have been looking for those two items and bang we found them. It is odd that it seems what we want we find almost immediately. A first time for me for sure.


The roads here in Coyote and Why are all dirt roads except for the highway of course. Since they get very little rain or inclement weather the roads stay pretty smooth..almost like a surface road. Some do have a few indentions where a flash flood passed through..... but other wise the roads are pretty okay.


The people of Why and Coyote Howls like to get together each week and play music...jam sessions...but really sounding very professional. They also have dances once a week and though I used to be a dancer do not do so much of that anymore......just too tired.....lol. Also a lot of other artists in this area that at some time I will interview and take pix of.


All in all Why is a very unusual place and I have grown to love it and its people but still getting used to this whole place and it still seems as if I were living on another planet..and in a sense I really am

      sorry that it has taken me so long to reply but have been sick for weeks with the flu....seems to be epidemic down here....but after drinking cresol tea that grows down here I am feeling so much better today although still coughing up a storm...lol thank you so much for your kind word..hugs....

    Wow, Kristina! Well, you know I went to Google Streetview several times while reading your accounts. I saw the Why Not Travel Store and the beautiful painted artwork, the umbrella tables and the old truck body. I saw the casino too, but Google didn't go up close to them, just on the highway. I experienced the West when I drove from TN to CA in the 80s. Quite an experience for someone who had never been in a desert, only through stories. I had heard of swamp air when research Phoenix. Now I know more about what it is as I looked it up as I read here.

    It sounds like you and your husband have found a place where you can live in peace again. Seems like your social lives will develop. I hope you are getting stronger each day. Will be thinking of you and reading more from time to time, as you share. ♥♥♥

      Sandy my dear friend sorry it took so long to answer..have been so sick with the flu....but loved everything you said...I love the Wynot store...everyone that stops is always is amazed at this place...the young woman that did this...a relative of the owners...did all this and turned that truck into a water fountain and planted all the shrubberies and well she is amazing.

      Never have heard of swamp air but will have to look it up....the desert here is so different then anyplace that I have ever been but I love it here..the mixture of nationalities is wonderful and the people so dear here. I need to go lay down for awhile but will answer your other posts later today. Love you my dear friend.

A very warm day here today...I believe over 80 degrees...whew.......I do wish that it were a little cooler...may have to start using our air conditioner. I really thought that when we moved here that it would be boring but to tell you the truth.. it never is...whether we see animals like coyote and fox...or a caravan of Volkswagen,,or like today....stage coaches going down the highway pulled by the most gorgeous mules. Never boring////that includes all the people pulling in and out of this park with their RVs and trailers. So many people to meet (a lady from Scotland today).... Kristina Mikkelson Casanova Dec 20,2018 Within a few hours we were in Sanpete county..the place we had lived for a few years and had considered it home. Mt. Pleasant had been a nice place to live but because of the Russian nap weed we could not stay and after being in this area for just a short time I was already breaking out. We had planned on staying in a near by camp ground thinking it was far enough away from this weed but distance was not the problem for it was in the air and they all landed in my face. Pete said that we would have to go and after putting some unneeded things in storage and taking some other things out (like a few of my paintings) we bought some items at the health food store .restocked our fridge and cupboards,stopped by a few friends who were not home, we left and headed for the town of Salina where our friends James and Amanda were living. Dutch Oven cooking

Pete and I have for sometime (but not lately) done a lot of Dutch Oven cooking and I figured that it is about time to start it up again. Nothing tastes better than food cooked over hot coals or a campfire cooking in cast iron pots. Right now they are sitting over in Coyote Howls east but will be lugging them over heer soon enough. Food cooks very fast and hot in these pans.once cooking a whole turkey in one less than an hour and the turkey was so well cooked it fell apart being so tender. the best turkey we ever ate. A favorite dessert of mine in the past was to open a can of pie apples or peaches.and pour it in.....then mix a yellow cake mix with butter and throw it over the fruit and let it bake. Cannot give you a times as each cooking is different. Now however I make my own pie apples or peaches and toss in my own mix. Now serve this with a big scoop of icecream and you will think that all of your dreams have come true. I once wanted to make a business of going ...
